[Antwiki.org] An informal collective term for the one or two isolated and reduced abdominal segments that occur between the mesosoma and gaster. When only the petiole (AII) is isolated the waist is said to be one-segmented, but in those taxa where the postpetiole (AIII) is also separated the waist is said to be two-segmented.
