F

face covered by appressed circular hairs

The cephalic dorsum is covered by highly modified, flattened, appressed, circular hairs. In Antkey, unique to Strumigenys hexamera.

face not covered by appressed circular hairs

The cephalic dorsum may have a variety of different hair types, but is covered by highly modified, flattened, appressed, circular hairs. Used in Antkey to separate all other Strumigenys species from Strumigenys hexamera.

first gastral segment lacking tubercles

First segment of gaster lacking small bumps or knobby protuberances.

first gastral segment with deep longitudinal furrows

First segment of the gaster (abdominal segment 3) with deep parallel longitudinal furrows running the length of the segment. Used in Antkey to separate Gnamptogenys from other genera.

first gastral segment with tubercles

The first gastral segment has small bumps or knobby protuberances on the dorsal surface. Used in Antkey to separate Acromyrmex species from Atta species.

first gastral segment without deep longitudinal furrows

First segment of the gaster (abdominal segment 3) variously sculptured, but never with deep parallel longitudinal furrows running the length of the segment. Used in Antkey to separate various other genera from Gnamptogenys.

flexuous

Bending or winding alternately from side to side; sinuous; flexible.

frontal carina

A pair of longitudinal ridges extending between the antennal sockets from the clypeus towards the posterior head margin. They are very variable in length and strength of development, but often form the upper antennal scrobe margin.

frontal lobes

The frontal carinae expanded into laterally projecting lobes which overhang and partially to entirely conceal the antennal sockets. In Antkey, absent in Amblyoponinae and Cerapachyinae.

frontal lobes broad (Myrmica)

The frontal lobes are short and broad, and are distinctly rounded anteriorly. Used in Antkey to separate Myrmica specioides from Myrmica rubra.

frontal lobes broad (Myrmicinae)

The frontal lobes relatively close together so that the posteromedian portion of the clypeus, where it projects between the frontal lobes, is at most only slightly broader than one of the lobes.

frontal lobes broad (Ponerinae)

The frontal lobes are relatively broad. Used in Antkey to separate Pachycondyla stigma from species in Hypoponera and Ponera.

frontal lobes do not obscure face margin between eyes and mandibles

The frontal lobes are extremely broad. They extend laterally to obscure the margin of the face between the eye and the mandible. Used in Antkey to separate Cephalotes and Cyphomyrmex from other myrmicine genera.

frontal lobes inconspicuous and far apart

The frontal lobes are very reduced, sometimes to a thing carina. Used in Antkey to separate Amblyoponinae and Cerapachyinae from Ponerinae.

frontal lobes narrow (Myrmica)

The frontal lobes are narrow, distinctly longer than broad and taper anteriorly. Used in Antkey to separate Myrmica rubra from Myrmica specioides.

frontal lobes narrow (Myrmicinae)

The frontal lobes are relatively far apart so that the posteromedian portion of the clypeus, where it projects between the frontal lobes, is much broader than one of the lobes.

frontal lobes narrow (Ponerinae)

The frontal lobes are relatively broad. Used in Antkey to separate Hypoponera and Ponera from Pachycondyla stigma.

frontal lobes obscure face margin between eyes and mandibles

The frontal lobes variously shaped, but never so broad as to obscure the margin of the face between the eye and the mandible. Used in Antkey to separate all other myrmicine genera from Cephalotes and Cyphomyrmex.

FRS (distance between frontal carinae)

The distance between frontal carinae. Used by Seifert (2003) to separate different species of Cardiocondyla.

funiculus

Composed of all the small antennal segments distal to the antennal scape.
