Scratchpads

The platform used to build Antkey. Scratchpads are Drupal based, multi-user websites that enable communities of researchers to manage, share and publish taxonomic data online.

scrobe
sculpture

The markings or pattern of impressions or elevations on a surface (T-B).

setae

Longer, often erect hairs that differ from the shorter, appressed pubescence.

slope of mesosoma gradual

The profile of the mesosoma slopes gently and gradually down as it approaches the posterior margin. There is not a sudden and steep decline from the posterior of promesonotum to the anterior of the propodeum. Used in Antkey to separate Cardiocondyla, Crematogaster, Myrmica, Tetramorium, Vollenhovia and Wasmannia from Pheidole.

slope of mesosoma steep

The gradual downward slope of the mesosomal profile is broken by a steep decline from the posterior of promesonotum to the anterior of the propodeum. Used in Antkey to separate Pheidole from Cardiocondyla, Crematogaster, Myrmica, Tetramorium, Vollenhovia and Wasmannia.

spongiform

Specialized sponge-like external cuticular tissue, distributed mainly about the waist segments in some groups of ants. In Antkey the only ants with spongiform are in Strumigenys.

sting lacking pendant tip

The sting is simple, tapering evenly into a posterior point. Used in Antkey to separate all other myrmicine genera from Tetramorium.

sting with pendant tip

The posterior tip of the string is shaped like a pendant, or triangle. Used in Antkey to separate Tetramorium from all other myrmicines.

subpetiolar process

[Antwiki.org] A ventral cuticular projection of the sternite of the petiole (AII), either below the node or on its anterior peduncle; sometimes absent but when present very variable in shape and size.

subpetiolar process developed as a flange or lobe (Solenopsis)

The subpetiolar process is well developed as a flange or lobe. The process is located at the far anterior end of the petiole and maybe be difficult to see on most specimens. Used in Antkey to separate Solenopsis xyloni from Solenopsis geminata.

subpetiolar process lacking fenestra (Amblyoponinae)

The subpetiolar process broad and with a fenestra present. Used in Antkey to separate Prionopelta antillana from Amblyoponinae zwaluwenburgi.

subpetiolar process lacking fenestra (Ponerinae)

The subpetiolar process lacks a fenestra, and also lacks a posteriorly projecting angle or tooth. Used in Antkey to separate Hypoponera from Ponera.

subpetiolar process weakly developed or absent (Solenopsis)

The subpetiolar process is weak to absent, never as a well developed flange or lobe. If a process is present, it is located at the far anterior end of the petiole and maybe be difficult to see on most specimens. Used in Antkey to separate Solenopsis geminata from Solenopsis xyloni.

subpetiolar process with fenestra (Amblyoponinae)

The subpetiolar process broad and with a fenestra present. Used in Antkey to separate Amblyopone zwaluwenburgi from Prionopelta antillana.

subpetiolar process with fenestra (Ponerinae)

The subpetiolar process has a fenestra at the anterior end, and often also has a posteriorly projecting angle or tooth. Used in Antkey to separate Ponera from Hypoponera.

synanthropic

Species of wild animals and plants of various kinds that live near, and benefit from, an association with humans and the somewhat artificial habitats that humans create around them.
