Solenopsis invicta is a mid-sized reddish species with polymorphic workers. They tend to make mound nests in open areas directly in the soil. The workers move deliberately and relatively slowly. They recruit heavily, form strong foraging trails and can easily dominate food resources. In the field they are impossible to distinguish from Solenopsis geminata and will hybridize with Solenopsis richeteri.
